The album features both instrumental tracks and tracks with vocals, including features from Anitta, Playboi Carti, and Lana Del Rey.
From director Trey Edward Shults, the psychological thriller stars the singer-songwriter, real name Abel Tesfaye, as a fictionalized version himself: Abel, an insomnia-plagued music superstar contending with heartbreak and self-dread, who meets a mysterious stranger by the name of Anima, or Ani (played by Jenna Ortega), after he suffers a mental break on stage. As they spend the night together, she pulls him into a mind-bending odyssey of self-interrogation. Barry Keoghan also stars as Abel's coked-up manager, Lee.
"It's about an artist, you could say, on the verge of a mental breakdown," Shults previously told Entertainment Weekly in an early first look, characterizing the film as unlike anything he's ever seen before. Tesfaye, who co-wrote the script with Shults and his former The Idol collaborator Reza Fahim, also called the experience of mining from real life "introspective and cathartic." "From writing to production and through post — I realized just how much of a catalyst this art form can be for conversations about our emotions, mental health, and vulnerabilities."
