about

Who is Drift? Drift is Sean Krainik, the founder of Parotic Records. Sean has put out music by the likes of DJ Slip, Johannes Heil, Matt Paffel, Dave Olson, Mr. Projectile (to name a few) in the past but he never put out his own music on vinyl…until now.

Drift was born in 2001, almost 4 years after Sean put out the first Parotic record. Running his own record label turned out to be a masterclass in songwriting. All of the artists Sean worked with over the years affected the way he builds tracks and thinks about music. When you work closely with other artists, you learn directly from your greats.

The Manic EP is a culmination of tracks he’s made over the years, curated from more than 20 years of songwriting. There’s something here for everybody, especially the DJ’s.

ā€œManicā€ builds itself up layer by layer to a pulsating beat while slightly distracting you by T.V. dialogue. ā€œMurderer’s Rowā€ is an oral exercise in keeping the right tempo and an unintended tribute to a couple of his influences like Baby Ford and Throbbing Gristle. It’s a little dark, it’s a little hazy. ā€œR$Wā€ bounces along and closes out the side on a brighter note, while the opener of the second side ā€œShockedā€ is a four-on-the-floor dance tune with ambient overtones. The closer ā€œWe Still Have All You Knowā€ is more downtempo and reminiscent of Actress or even Spacek.

It’s music to dance to, music to read to, music to nod your head to, music to ask, ā€œdid he really do that?ā€. It’s a dive into the mind of a label owner, father, painter, wine geek and a way to get this music out to a new generation of folks wondering what all the fuss is about.
